The average citizen has no fucking clue how taxes work in general. I’m consistently amazed at how many people think that, if you make over a certain amount of money, you’ll actually lose money because of taxes.

I’ve seen it myself right here in the Jez comments. There was a commenter who swore taxes were lower in Sweden — by pulling this cute trick of only mentioning one very precise type of Swedish national tax (and ignoring all others) and comparing it to every tax and fee combined that they had to pay in America,…

People do really believe this. I get told this on a regular basis from US residents who insist they pay more tax than literally anywhere else in the world.

This has been going on for decades and it’s always amazed me how US citizens are one of the lowest taxed populations on the entire planet, while simultaneously being the most upset about having to pay taxes.

I do think they believe it, because it has been repeated as a right-wing talking point for so long. Like many tenets of conservative ideology, its truth arises from the fact that it is dogma, not any relation to reality. High taxes, war on coal, excessive government regulation: these are the three things holding back…

They are probably excluding all those damn pinko countries (with better education and health care and infant mortality rates and standards of living) when they say that.
