Most likely they wanted the latest iPad for the retina display to make sure the game scales nicely from iPhone to new iPad.
Two things stuck out for me. The bullet holes in enemies and also they will hold the area where they are wounded. I hope that will work to my advantage where I can shoot an enemy in the leg and maybe their comrades will try to go to them but I can use it as a trap or just straight up incapacitate the enemies.

Same here. I don't play many games on my ipad except for FF Tactics. The retina display is the main reason why I'm upgrading because like you I read a lot of comics. I'll be upgrading to the 3g version though since there are areas I go to that don't have wifi.
