SS is already tax free for lower income people (<$25k/32k single/joint) . Even for the highest income people, only 85% of SS income is taxed, so even there they are getting a tax break. And Is there really a case to be made for making SS tax free for higher income people?

^ this is the correct take. The government should not encourage people to go into debt, except for capital expenditures. Your house is an appreciating asset so it makes sense to encourage home buying. The car is a depreciating asset, so it makes no sense to go into debt to buy it.
