I suspect that liability is why you see similar features in luxury cars, but they are deployed as back-up safety features to correct for human competence rather than autonomous driving features. When someone starts drifting out of a lane and the system buzzes and corrects their mistake, there is not a lot of liability

dude you missed out on xgames in july at cota. that was a nightmare. dunno whos idea it was but that was pretty stupid. was supposed to happen much longer but i think they canned it after 2 years realizing central texas in the middle of summer being outside all day was a bad mix.

They’re developing tech with an eye focused on the bottom line - not on safety. They should be developing it off public streets.

If McDonalds started building bridges and an early one collapsed, you don’t think there’d be a few people questioning why a fast food giant was doing infrastructure?

Yep, the only way to safely monitor an automated system is with another automated system of dissimilar design. If it is a safety critical system, then there are plenty of standards to tell you how to develop and verify these systems. I work in the Aerospace industry, and we use guidance like ARP-4754, DO-178c, DO-160,

David, thanks again for another amazing story. Maybe the best one I’ve read here, yet, even though I was familiar with the awesomeness of the Helms’.

The point here isn’t “a human driver might have killed the pedestrian, too.”

It’s Austria not Australia

It certainly won’t be an easy investigation. Flaws in the decision-making of machine-learning systems are as-good-as impossible to predict. Furthermore, the current generation of computer scientists, educated to work in Silicon Valley, are ill-equipped to write and analyze code for safety-critical systems.

Same here! Love the sound of planes! Occasionally get a low flying one in the middle of the night and the sound is comforting. I realize not everyone is like this, and if you aren’t, don’t move in by an airport!

i’ve never had a welder, which is a huge part of it. i’m learning that it’s impossible to do anything to a car without one.

Suburban sprawl creates more pollution than cities since everyone has to rely on single occupancy vehicles and they lack of density which leads to more greenfield development that takes out undeveloped wilderness. Yeah it is crazy how most people do not understand this.

Dude - never, ever turn away and put your camera down when a flying car is taking off.....

Hmm, let me try to follow her train of thought. Just crashed into a semi truck + multi car pile up in a blizzard. Gonna text first instead of looking at what might hit her from behind. Sadly, no Darwin award for this one.

Thank you for your congratulations, maybe driving a jeep makes regular speed limits interesting but any modern car is a boredom vessel at those speeds... I’m not talking autobahn speeds but reasonable speed limits.

It would be a lot easier to put the LF4 Twin Turbo V6 in it. The Colorado/Canyon has no V8 engine mount system, which costs about 2m to develop. GM could however chuck the ATS-V’s twin turbo V6 in it with minimal work.

Those routes would be through expensive real estate that no one wants to give up for what Amtrak or whoever would want to pay for it.

Must be nice you can’t even fly half way across Canada for $650

Yes, a Big Red Firetruck akin to the Broadside of a Barn.
