I live in a prison town, and due to my job as the public librarian see some of the female who come to see their husbands, boyfriends, etc who are incarcerated.  Many of the men are serving life sentences for horrific sexual crimes against children.  I will never understand why they find these monsters appealing

Most serial killers wind up with groupies. And one needn’t be physically attractive to attain them. If I recall correctly, Richard Ramirez had ardent groupies, who would show up to court. I think it has to do with fame/infamy, power, danger, etc.  It’s definitely not rational.
