I toured a plantation near Nashville last year, and they have a whole exhibit set up in the former slave quarters about who the people were who worked there and their stories. I thought it was quite nicely done.

Whenever people rave on about Thomas Jefferson I think of this. He enslaved and sold his own children by Sally Hemmings. When he took her to France (where she could have legally applied for asylum) he kept her in line by threatening to sell their kids.

That is frustrating, but I would argue that makes it even more important that they do teach it. Not having the truth presented to them in history books during school has led people to be not fully aware of the horrors of slavery, and not bringing it up at historical sites only reinforces that "it wasn't so bad" idea.

I don’t know if it’s poor education or just wishful thinking by the tourists, but when places try to educate visitors on the horrors of slavery many visitors argue with the facts. Although they haven’t been active in a while, @afamhistfail used to tweet about working at historic houses/museums trying to teach the

Mount Vernon at least doesn’t totally ignore them, even before this particular exhibit. I have been to the property a few times and there is a section of the slave quarters where they detail the living and working conditions. It’s not as extensive as it probably should be, but it wasn’t wholly sanitized and sugar

Man, I hope I can swing getting to see this! This should be an awesome exhibit. I find it so strange that the lives of 99% of the people that live at these famous houses are totally ignored in a lot of the tours and such. They had interesting lives too! At least some of them probably have awesome stories of their own

When i learned about this I was still waiting on my last paycheck and drove home blasting Bitch Better Have My Money over and over and over in the car, crying in raaaaaage

Is there where I get to complain about how *after* I quit my job at Bank of America, I found out I was blocked from a promotion because, despite my boss, his boss, and several peers recommending me enthusiastically, the boss above them had an uncomfortable boner for me and said my attire was inappropriate?

I wear dresses, leggings, and flats because they are easier to put on. A couple of months ago my coworker asked if I constantly wore dresses as a “religious thing” which I found odd because the dresses I wear aren’t very conservative. Her eyebrows reached a new level when I explained that I do it because it is

“You need to dress properly - it’s about respect!”

Some guy was yelling at me on Facebook last week because I have a daughter and “how can I be ok with dudes in the bathroom with her?!” I told him I was more concerned about my 15-year-old stepson who is mildly autistic being assaulted by a man in the men’s room. You have never seen such rapid backpedaling.

What frustrates me is that this is only an issue now. Pedophiles who are into the same gender could have theoretically been preying on children in restrooms for decades and decades.

Bingo. Keep the base scared to leave their Fox news boxes. Afraid to let their kids out to run around the block or play with other kids (even though most kids are attacked by someone they know). Afraid that SOMEONE is going to take their jobs (even though it’s the corporations that shipped their job overseas and the

Yes but what about the wives and children they feel like they own?

Near as I can figure this is what’s really going on:

I think we all know the most reasonable solution: separate restrooms for conservative men.

It really needs to be explained visually to these people, like they were five year olds.

They’re PUBLIC BATHROOMS FFS.

Do they really not see how creepy this makes them look? And do they not see that they probably could have done this anywhere because there isn’t security standing in front of the women’s bathrooms?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we have more reason, statistically speaking, to fear conservative men in bathrooms than trans men and women. Between Larry Craig, Dennis Hastert in the locker room, among others, republican men get up to much seedier shit in a restroom than trans people.
