Its not remotely cheap to move to a live system (something that would have to handle updates coming in from hundreds/thousands of stores every few seconds without falling over), and not worth the cost to do so. So yeah, they can do better. But the few extra sales will not be worth the cost.…

That works if the system that is showing availability is the same system that is decremented upon a sale. When there are multiple places and points in the many different systems involved it’s not that easy. Data has to be batch loaded for speed or else you’d overwhelm the system with queries.

yep, as former retail i can say these systems are almost always inaccurate, particularly for sales (hot) items. stock counts are only done so often, and most stores you have to do them manually.

Obviously things like breakage and theft are gonna throw counts off sometimes, but really this should be the sort of thing that’s kept up in real-time. You started the day with 10 widgets, and someone just scanned one at a register - now the database should show 9 widgets, like, right away.
