From the commentaries, UPN deliberately pushed Jason to be a gross out character because apparently they thought that was "edgy". So glad they toned it down after the revival.

I fell in love with the show because I could relate to it. At the time, I only had two close friends and my parents just went through a divorce. I lived with my mom. (she was worked closing shifts at the time, which was why I was able to watch TV so late)
