I'm really hoping this new thought process of theirs translates into better designed phones, tablets, tv's, etc ... I know they aren't the ones manufacturing the devices, but it would be nice to see them take a better direction on the design of say their flagship products.

Except that it won't actually run well, or smoothly, especially if the hardware itself is old... tried it on my '05 PC for a few weeks before I ended up just giving it the hammer treatment.

I agree with you to a certain degree - apple products are well overpriced, and ironically, compared to Windows based PC's, they may actually last 5 or 6 years. But in all honesty, wouldn't you want to upgrade your device in 3-4? All the computers that aren't being supported are from '06 or '07 - I would say it's time…
