It's not quite that simple but we can almost do what you're explaining. The phone just needs to use the same technology as the carrier (GSM or CDMA) and usually requires unlocking (usually very simple.)

I'm not so sure. WebOS is a seriously awesome OS. The hardware HP put it on was totally subpar. Imagine WebOS on Apple hardware... God damn.

I think Jesus has Apple's intentions all wrong. They weren't trying to make OS X something for the computer illiterate; that's what iOS is for. They were trying to simplify things for the power user, which they absolutely did.
