One thing to consider is that these are older nerds, mid-thirties now. The things they are interested in are the same things they originally fixated on in high school. People, for the most part, don’t vary their interests much as they age. Hence, the continuing popularity of 80's music in my house.

I’d be fine with it if Picard starts the series a tired beaten down old man, regretting past decisions and mourning old friends lost. Over the course of the series, he can regain his old optimism, and hope, and renew his commitment to Roddenberry’s vision.
