ND just for the “If not sold in a few days it’ll go up online to auction” threat.

You say “air cooled” in the article, but Vanagons from 1983 onwards were water-cooled (the “Wasserboxer” engines). The front of this one shows the characteristic 2nd, lower radiator grill of that type as well.

So to clarify a few things in this article:

Hagerty puts a condition 3 car at $35k so it’s a relative bargain

Budget tires are always a red flag for me, especially on a non-budget vehicle. Modest spending can be a virtue, and a necessity depending on where you are in life. But if you’ve splurged on a range rover but go low spec on tires, where else were costs cut?

This is the masochist’s car of choice. It is the car one buys when one feels insufficiently depressed or too financially secure. If one never actually needs to to go anywhere, this is your vehicle. Should one be seeking an immersive education in public transit usage, buy this car. If you enjoy reading by the dashboard

That’s a big Negative Ghost Rider. The OG Rovers are coming back into fashion because they are SIMPLE. The more moderns LR are maintenance nightmares.  Like ruin your life, you need a second mortgage to afford repair level nightmares.  Unless your smart, or lucky, like Big Daddy Doug with his CarMax Warranty run away,

I’ve long thought you produced the best writing on this site, but your use of the British art of the understatement paired with a British car is brilliant.

The 20-inch alloys have been painted black (the spare is still factory silver) and perhaps are the worse for it.” Perhaps, nothing. Black wheels must die and this vehicle is a perfect example of why.

no it wasn't  !

The world has lost it’s mind.

Wow that solid honeycomb pattern on the back bumper. Geesh. That’s brutal. Handsome everywhere else, but that rear bumper is a deal killer.

Kinja’s new feature = replacing images & video with pale grey blocks!

I keep getting emails from Venmo telling me how I can invest my Venmo money into crypto.  Yeah, and I can set it on fire too.

The Turbo S Beetle is the Audi TT of Beetles. I get the whole Smyth pickup thing but it’s too bad a fairly rare Turbo S was used for the conversion. ND

“Well-crafted”...I know this is just knit-picking, the rear tires aren’t centered in the fenders...and there looks to be a straight edge on the left rear fender arch.,,aaaand the fit and finish on the b-pillars is not great.

TIL! And that's not a bad looking Charger

These cars were very unreliable, even when new, and I wouldn’t want one now, even bone-stock, for any price. This is an interference engine with a rubber timing belt, however the design of the engine cover hides the fact that this engine uses a timing belt, so most of these went to the junkyard once the belt failed.

I really like this. I would be tempted at $12-15K since it is not that far away, but I am concerned the bed isn’t long enough to sleep in when my wife throws me out. I really like this strange conversion, but the miles on this motor and an almost twenty year-old conversion makes $19.5K too much.  ND

There is nothing specifically desirable about this car except its oddly nice condition. So do you pay a huge premium for that and then not drive it in the hope that at some point you can also sell this weird, non-desirable but great shape old car to someone else ten years from now? Or do you drive it regularly and
