we had one at my HS, but it was completely unexpected - a Dutch girl that set all of our school records in XC.  Other than that, it was mainly kids who were allowed on the team for the experience and generally sucked at sports.

one of the schools my HS played annually had an AD who was also the director of the foreign exchange program. Their teams always had one or two foreign ringers each year leading them to states.

Season two was a mess because the writers thought they were going to be cancelled after season one and there was the writers strike around then. at the charity game I was at (Thunder Dan was raising money so kids in Grand Rapids, MI schools didn’t have to do pay to play) he was raining threes and at one point pulled up from nearly 40 and calmly drained it. He was the man indeed.
