I think the biggest gains are going to come from getting the heavy gas-guzzling motors and cars up to better numbers, no matter the technology used. Squeezing a 40mpg 4-cylinder compact up to 45mpg is nice, but getting a 15mpg V8 SUV up to 20mpg is a major improvement.
