I think there are many reasons, but first and foremost: Comic Sans is a newer font (~1994), whereas Helvetica has been around longer (~1957).

Not sure if this scratches that itch, but the "Notification Center" with all pending/outstanding notifications are accessible from any screen. Swipe from the very top of the screen to the very bottom. That will "pull down" the Notification shade. Here you should see all current reminders/etc.
