X is the first one I played a couple of years ago and it got its hooks in fast. It has a “modern enough” feel, the battle system provides some light but basic strategy, the story is good, the characters are memorable, it looks fantastic even for its age, and the leveling mechanics are unique yet easy-to-understand.

Given coverage in the months leading up to release, how could their expectations by then have been anything other than “This will be an unmitigated disaster”?

“Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows....”

“Anomaly deTACted.... probe lunched... anomaly FAOONED!.... gettin’ a scahn.

Isn’t this hearsay?

A toast to every “Buyer beware”-ignoring idiot who paid extra money for early access - and perpetuated one of the worst elements of pre-order game distribution - getting what they deserved.

Is this a bad time to queue up Paul McCartney’s “Hope for the Future”?

My personal pick, by the way, is “The Witcher 3.” More than enough has been written about that game.

I know a lot of Mario games are going to be mentioned here, but I’d stake the best sequel in the history of that franchise is “Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.” It’s a shame Nintendo hasn’t truly tried to follow it up in a way that remains true to the formula, though I’m at least glad more people will be able to

Embracer is really doing an excellent job racing to the top of the scum pile.

I’ll go a step futher and say she’s the most underrated character in the franchise, both from a story perspective and a “Built properly, she can really mess enemies up” perspective.

I think we’ve just found X-2's biggest fan. That game is an embarrassment. It nukes characterization (see: Rikku’s plummet in intelligence during the chocobo pursuit,) exploits its own cast in ways that have aged absolutely terribly, and ditches a unique battle system for the same-old/same-old disguised by a

A cappella!

I’m mildly upset about Kit Fisto not making this list.

I don’t care what industry professionals you find. Getting a bunch of them together only for them to weigh their choices in completely different ways, mostly defaulting to “I like this most” is not a good way to make these lists. It’s an excellent way to almost completely toss innovation out the window when it comes

Starfield will feature over 250,000 lines of dialogue.”
