Why do people write personal essays about why they dislike soccer, then feel the need to substitute "Americans" where the word "I" belongs?

Not a stupid question! My dad told me it's a way to experience how the less fortunate feel. Something I should have added: Ramadan also involves praying more (though I don't do that), giving to charity, and according to my dad, being a nicer person to people.
