Without discussing price, I'm stoked to see 4-cylinder BMWs again. I have an e36 318i and yeah, it's slow, but it's still fun to drive. The M42 engine is responsive and happy in high RPMs, and forces you to wring its neck if want any kind of speed out of it. It's a good time.

I had two major issues with it.

It's a huge improvement over the old car on the inside. Lots of the interior quirks hated by Americans — the giant, center-mounted speedometer, window buttons on the center console, stuff like that — are now gone. The layout of buttons and switches is much more intuitive than past cars.

Yup, it's pretty cool.
