Um, why is this story of an asshole harassing a coworker framed as a feud between two people?
Um, why is this story of an asshole harassing a coworker framed as a feud between two people?
Exactly.
He actually slapped her in the face, so whether he claims to have been in character, he still slapped a woman in real life across the face. So to me he’s a piece of garbage.
As my son just said, “This makes the whole ‘I’m walkin’ here!’ scene a lot less funny.”
Yeah, it’s never been clear to me why smoking-hot Mrs. Robinson wanted to fuck Dustin Hoffman.
That’s why I HATE that movie—it makes her the bad guy while we’re supposed to rejoice for him—he’s an utter dick.
Considering she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in The Deer Hunter and had already won an Obie, I’m going to have to disagree with calling her a newbie. She was a she, which I think was the ultimate problem. Hoffman’s a well-documented, notorious asshole. None of this is surprising (that people are…
I’m a little surprised at the framing of this as “tension on set.” This wasn’t an interpersonal conflict. This was Dustin Hoffman being an abusive asshole, full stop.
You are crediting Dustin Hoffman for Meryl Streep’s Oscar winning performance. Uh, no.
Let’s do the Oscar math shall we?
One quote from the VF piece: "Clearly, there was a discrepancy between what they saw and how Meryl saw herself. Was she a fearless advocate, telling three powerful men exactly what their script was missing? Or was she a basket case whose raw grief was written all over her face? Whichever Meryl Streep walked out of…
Physically assaulting someone isn’t what needs to be done for a movie scene. Sorry.
He slapped her. More than once. That’s not ‘method acting.’
The spoiler alert statute of limitations has long since run out.
Okay, so now I actively dislike Hoffman.
He thought he knew how she should be acting in order to get what HE needed from the scene and took it upon himself to perform physical violence on Meryl Streep, when he should have been working together with her to get it instead. Even though he was not the director and was not in charge, he thought he knew best and…
What’s even more, as an actor - there are other ways to emote and get into character. Method always struck me as just lazy. The actors that can turn it on and off at the drop of a hat? Those are the talented ones, none of this being in character 24/7 to “prepare”-fucking obnoxious.
Yes, but in the same book, there’s also the story about how Hoffman fucked up a scene and caused it to be rewritten because he felt it made his character look weak. Hoffman is a jerk.
Meryl Streep is amazing to keep on keeping on against a bunch of much more established men and their manly ways. However I wish she had slapped DH back, he seems like a real crusty taint. I just rewatched The Graduate and think he is unintentionally awful in the part and I kept thinking about who would have been…
