Your argument is correct if traffic is flowing. However, if traffic is flowing it’s not really important to ensure the zipper merge. However, when traffic is stopped or inching along you need to zipper merge at the end of the merge lane to maximize the available space for cars and create a predictable traffic pattern.

I am proud to say I have converted at least one bad merger into a zipper merger person. My wife used to say I was a “dick” for insisting on going to the end of the lane to merge, but during a very long road trip we timed out each merge tried both methods. It wasn’t even close and it became very obvious how dumb it was…

You cannot move twice, period. Braking, accelerating, coasting, it does not matter. You get one defensive move for the safety of the drivers, track workers, and fans.
