I agree with Meredith on some points - mainly that they saved several episodes worth of storytelling for just one final BLAM! moment. It could have helped several episodes earlier in the season if they had been willing to let these morsels fall throughout.

Yes, because I'm sure she was thinking about how this affects her son when he goes to school, middle school, and high school. I'm sure she thought how this would follow him around for a good part of his early life with hazing and teasing.
