Yeah, the focus on events is a good point. Deadwood had an overarching theme about both the creation of civilization out of chaos and wilderness and the destructive forces behind civilization. Boardwalk Empire gets too bogged down in being a gangster show.

The outside mobsters have sorta functioned primarily as plot devices so far. They're present but their stories are secondary to their use in driving the events in AC. The deeper stories are reserved for the fictional characters- Nucky, Van Alden, Chalky, Jimmy, etc.

The biggest mark against Foo Fighters is they're just so godawfully bland. It's not worth mustering up the energy to dislike them since obviously so little effort was put into the music. At least Creed and the associated knockoff acts that came at the ass end of the 90s were objectively terrible on all counts;

Making it an ipad app kinda defeats the purpose of the original show being on public television. It's not really reaching the group of kids who would most benefit from someone encouraging them to read if you catch my drift.

It's baffling that "Simple Man" gets all the attention when "I Need You" is by far their best ballad.

Southern rock is really part and parcel with the 70s. It was supplanted as the populist working class white music of the south by metal in the 80s. Drive-By Truckers' po-faced attempt at recreating that sound and by extension era inevitably comes across like T-Bone Burnett's revisionist Americana work. Way too NPR.
