Let me compare it to taking Jazz lessons on the flute. I can still say I'm taking Jazz lessons, even if I'm only a beginner and technically learning the basics of the flute first. Dressage is a style and a certain way of sitting in the seat, isn't it? So, you have to learn the basics before doing trickier things.
