Not that bizarre. I'm 21, and from a neighborhood that's mostly white, upper-middle-class, very Christian and conservative. There were a handful of kids I grew up with whose parents were divorced, but it definitely wasn't the norm.

My mom is very set in her opinion that having kids outside of marriage is a Bad Idea. She even says a shotgun wedding is what people should do if the parents can stand each other at all. Even if they end up getting divorced a few years later. Because being raised by parents who were never married is terrible for kids.…
