Sounds like this had the same problem as I, Robot. It was decided the source material as written wouldn’t make a good film

I also liked Harlan Ellison’s script for an earlier I, Robot movie, which borrowed the narrative format from Citizen Kane — Susan Calvin dies at the beginning of the movie, and a reporter reconstructs her life by talking to the people who knew her, with some of the flashbacks using elements from different Asimov

Most of the actual action happens off the page and Goyer has said that he chose to show that action to make the story filmable and to show more character development.

It is quite well known that Asimov wrote Foundation as a sort of scifi meditation of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.

I’ve long thought that the only way the story of Foundation could be adapted to video would be partly as an anthology series, up until the Mule comes along.
