They could've done this by trying to get high-profile producers or a director with name recognition as well. Really, there are so many ways this project could have been done more respectfully-it's too bad.

This is such a reasonable response! I think there's a way to acknowledge the controversy surrounding the casting without writing the film off before seeing it (which a couple of posters here couldn't manage), and this is the way to do it.

There's really no engaging with people who argue 'Hey, this isn't an issue or an injustice because I don't want to understand it, or don't wish to engage with it, why are 'you people' so upset?'

There's really not much more to say that hasn't already been expressed here. I guess internet law #5 should be invoked:never try to have a discussion with someone who is unwilling to doubt that they're correct.

Just gonna repost this in case you feel like being less ignorant.

Let's just save some time here:

I mean, we all look exactly alike, and it's not like there's any kind of messy history of colorism at stake here. Really, what's the problem, people??

Given her performance in Justified, Ms. Martindale should always have the title 'Beloved Character Actress'.

I hugged my little guy a few extra times at bedtime this evening.

Absolutely. This show is unafraid of the messy contradictions of identity politics in America during the Obama years. The balance of warmth, humor, affection, and thoughtfulness is fantastic. They have faced down so many nuanced issues over various episodes, and done so incredibly successfully. The show isn't perfect,

Maybe I didn't make this point clearly-that's what I meant. It seems like a strange leap, and maybe a gendered one at that, to assume that Zoey will gain some kind of sexual agency as a result of the car. Mostly I was poking around for discussion (rather than implying that this was the aim of this episode) because

So true! I've been following the comments on the reviews for PoI as I've been watching, but of course the conversation is two years old and I can't really comment-thanks for indulging me a little!!

I just watched that episode earlier this week-a 'cheer out loud' moment for me! So much legit female badassery on this show.

Amy Acker is at peak 'Amy Acker' on PoI, so if you liked her amazing Fred/Illyria switches on Angel you'd probably be a fan. I find her character on PoI to be incredibly annoying so far (I like Acker in general, and also loved her on Angel) but I'm in the extreme minority. Given that there are so many other compelling

I've been making my way through PoI over the last month or so (one episode about 5-6 days a week) and I have to say it is quite the slow burn. I skipped around the first season using a couple of helpful comments from AV Club folks, and I'm finding that I really didn't get invested until about 2/3rds of the way through

I hadn't given it much thought while watching the episode, and perhaps it wasn't really the focus or theme the writers were going for tonight, but Dre's protectiveness of Zoey is interesting. Had this been Junior, would there have been a conversation about having girls in his car? Of course, this is Junior, and he has

This was hands down the funniest thing in the episode.

Upvoting for a RTJ reference..

That was the first thing that came to mind when I heard that song!
