Maybe I love it because it was the first one I saw, but Fallen Angels has the single best moment in all WKW movies for me, when Takeshi Kaneshiro watches the tapes…

I cringe at the idea of Blueberry Nights introducing WKW to people, mostly because I love his other films so much more. As other people have replied, he's not going to get faster paced…

The preeminent Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Who else will sing you Cranberries songs in Cantonese?

I think WKW wanted her as the lead, and when she decided she couldn't he went with Norah Jones. I'm not sure it would've been better (or worse), sounds like a gamble. But it worked with Faye Wong, I suppose.

Ditto. Somehow the things he's done all the time didn't carry over with this cast—it's not like there isn't over the top narration in practically everything, always an overly gorgeous cast…But (this actually shouldn't be counted as a knock on anyone in My Blueberry Nights, just a statement of fact): none of them are

So the story was one MacGuffin after another, but I enjoyed the action (choreography and so on) quite a bit. It's not Johnny To or anything, but enjoyable stuff.

I think "narrow focus" is generally a good thing, making for tighter "historical" movies than those that want to show everything. So Lincoln focuses on the amendment passage and doesn't cover Lincoln's evolution on blacks in America and you don't have him meeting Frederick Douglass, say, and Lincoln feels like an

Poor 5th guy in the squad doesn't rate a description…

He's right about Police vs. Beatle songs, so ehh, I'd like to give him a pass on that one comment. I figure he sounds way worse elsewhere.

I took it like a German expressionist play that was outside—and I liked it, though not in a "hey everybody see this" kind of way. But mostly I remember seeing Drive with people who hadn't seen any Refn movies, and not only feeling like I had a handle on it, knowing I had seen one where the lead talks less.

But it was unauthorized! They, too, were fighting the machine.

I feel like Tim Burton's reputation had leveled out, but I swear there were a couple of museum retrospectives recently that put in back in the big praise zone. Or I'm being mean.

I should've split the criticism a bit. I think Eastwood gets lazy, and Tim Burton is hacky. Eastwood has great taste, even if mine isn't always in sync, but I've always come away feeling that he could do with one more draft on the writing or frequently just one more take out of his actors. A lot of scenes just shy of
