You know, I've actually seen that miniseries (well, the first half), but its first introduction in the US was the novelization, and mentally I just assume most people are referring to that—but I forgot that it did eventually get released in the US. I saw it on bootleg vhs actually, when such things were still made.

I have some affection for the first Books of Magic series, or at least some specific issues of John Rey Neiber's run. There's a moment here and there of really nailing adolescence.

Me too. I really wonder how much he planned through, there's some ridiculous-level plotting throughout. Sandman had some loops in it, some incidents that matter more once the story is rolling, but Carey went for a whole mess of moving parts.
