You’re also assuming that it is an all-or-none proposition. Who says that there will not be a compromise? :-) IMHO, VW would not have sent a delegation from Audi if the talk was going to be centered around non-road-relevant engines. My guess is that everyone will get what they want out of the new formula (teams,

Pneumatically actuated valves will actually make it to road cars for the following reasons: efficiency (near-zero dwell times); you can alter the timing at will, turn cylinders on/off far more easily than with a cam-based setup, switch fuels, alter the cycle of the engine altogether; lower engine height, lower engine

And, this tech does move down. The next generation 911s already have many bits and bobs from the 918. McLaren trickles tech down its model lineup, as does Ferrari. Importantly, the knowhow gained is used in engineering and manufacturing of cars all across their model ranges.

We can be fairly confident that the next engine formula will not be rendered absolutely irrelevant to road-cars. There is a large middle ground between the two extremes. That middle ground will be met to the satisfaction of all stakeholders (including fans) :-)
