Yeah but Jesuits are the educated “thinking” Catholics... Not to say they haven’t caused some shit too (the Haudenosaunee, aka Iroquois, are looking at you guys...), but they’re not exactly run-of-the-mill Sunday church-goers...

Maybe because with the fucked up state of the American educational system, partisan media and gerrymandering, a lot of people *couldn’t* vote, they couldn’t get their psycho-social/economic/geo-politcial shit together to vote. It’s rough when the whole system is set on disenfranchising undesirable voters...

The exact same can be said of Canada... I live in the capital, which is about a 2 hour drive to New York state - Toronto and Montreal are equally close. What illegal handguns are in circulation here are smuggled from the US or stolen from licensed owners. Our situation is far from perfect, but I guarantee you there

Ha ha, you can’t possibly be American, you would’ve gone up in a puff of smoke for uttering those words...

It’s not “impossible to say”. Canada and Australia, as just two examples with which I am familiar (having lived in both places) and which have equivalent or higher standards than the US (developed nations, high GDP, good education, good healthcare etc.), have much stricter regulations and far fewer problems...

Lol* to the US actually having a concrete and effective national dialogue about gun violence.

They’ve never heard the bits about cooperation, mutual aid and sharing of resources, that’s for sure!

I am that bunny! That’s basically what I said while rolling my eyes and glaring at my computer screen... Although I added a “fucking”. These guys do way more harm than good, and they don’t fucking understand any but the worst tenets of anarchism anyway!

It *was* delightful!

I don’t even think I’ve seen the Anne Hathaway one, so can’t even claim amnesia :)

Yes - no Ella!

I really like Amy Adams* and cerebral sci-fi, so Arrival was a no-brainer for me.

In Ottawa, Canada, they were anticipating 500 and got 6000-8000! I was flabbergasted, and really annoyed with myself that I found out about it too late to go...

Yes, shweddy id’d them below! I actually thought you were talking about the Ron Perlman/Linda Hamilton tv series, which was so bad, but which I loved as a kid... I also loved all the depressing Christmas-season short film versions of fairy tales with all the dying matchgirls and frozen sparrows and drowned mermaids.

You beat me to it! I loved all those early 80s fairy tale short films (that were inexplicably always aired at Christmas), including the Oscar Wilde short stories like the Little Match Girl and The Happy Prince, and HCA’s original The Little Mermaid (where they actually end the movie with her dying). I’m totally

I was excited for the “live action” Beauty and the Beast until I realized it was a remake of the Disney-fied version, and not the original fairy tale like I had hoped :/

Every mushroom cloud has a silver lining...

Well and isn’t the whole notion of automatic respect for the office completely antithetical to the founding fathers’ intentions?? I’m just a Canadian observer, but I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to be bowing and scraping before the office holder just ‘cause it’s holding the office...

Yup, wait and see is the mantra (and we’re not supposed to be harping on about Trump with American colleagues in order to minimize workplace depression - seriously, we’ve basically been told to play really nice, as though America’s grandma just died and it needs some quiet time to pull itself back together).

Agreed. That said, it is highly unlikely that NOW Trump is suddenly going to care about ethics and optics and professionalism and grant ambassadorships on the basis of merit/experience. I work on international files (also not in the US) and we’re really scratching our heads over what work with the US is going to be
