Yeah, when one partner focuses on career and the other on family, it's essentially the couple making a joint investment in one partner's future career success, and as with other more tangible forms of investment, it should be divided up like shared property would be.

I'm not sure fairness has much to do with it. Is it fair for any particular child to live on pb&j or worse while another lives off steak? It's not like they had any choice in who to pick as parents. I know you're not saying it explicitly, but I do think there could be an implication there that a kid who grew up

I don't think that's quite fair. Being close to someone for a long time changes the way we see that person. (My mental pictures of my parents are probably a decade or two behind their real ages because that's how I've seen them most of my life and how they look in my memories.)
