Yeah, I’ve actually wondered what’s going to happen to that song/video/album. To the best of my knowledge, they haven’t announced its erasure, but I could see that happening. If future season two releases don’t include the video I won’t be surprised.

FWIW, apparently he didn’t actually have much to do with writing it

I think important cultural works should be preserved and widely available. This episode of The Simpsons is somewhat unfortunate in retrospect, but it’s one of the most important episodes of one of the most important TV shows of all time. For reference, I think important cultural products like The Cosby Show should be

So did they film his cameo before or after he was #MeTooed?

He literally moonwalks in the animation. It’s structured around him. There isn’t even really a pop star in 2019 who’s nearly as beloved as Jackson was back then. So no they couldn’t just overdub him. It would need to be largely rewritten and animated.

As of now, the S3 Simpsons DVD set seems to be selling through all its stock on Amazon and other places. Anyway, I would apply the same thing to streaming. I think it should be preserved there with an unskippable warning that notes the context in which it was made. In order to watch it there you have to actively

They can even swap in dialogue from other episodes!

I think there’s a distinction to be made between having it on DVD and actively airing in repeats, though. I support pulling it from the latter, but to see it on a physical disc you have to seek it out and select to play it. If they include a warning or some such on future disc presses (preferably something unskippable

Yeah and this was partly why he didn’t actually sing on the episode. I HOPE it’s true that his estate gets no money from it (I’m a pretty firmly art vs. artist guy, but I’m never going to listen to Jackson’s music again without it being “unofficial”) but if that isn’t the case I could see it being a concern.

You’re thinking of Sonic 3, though that’s actually an interesting case as SEGA apparently won’t release that game anymore. Granted, I don’t think that has to do with MJ per se but rather that some of the music (owing partly to the MJ connection...but it’s a long story) is basically ripped off from some other artist

According to Mike Reiss they had already stopped writing dialogue for him before the doc came out.

You’re not exactly wrong; the blow up about it was false, but apparently they had already quietly stopped using him before the doc came out. Writer/producer Mike Reiss said he hadn’t spoken more than once or twice in the couple years before it released.

They effectively dropped the character already. That’s about all they actually could do.

I feel that might be helped by the fact that it wasn’t really him. (MJ did the voice in The Simpsons - singing aside - so it’s a bit more difficult to grapple with.) That is still sort of difficult though. I hope they don’t erase that scene or “Beat It” out of future releases of that film, but it wouldn’t surprise me

Lots of shows get pulled, but most shows are not The Simpsons. It would be noticed, especially with it disappearing off popular platforms like Simpsons World. Hell, I was actively wondering the last couple weeks if it might get pulled. A statement about it kind of makes sense.

It’s actually POSSIBLE they get residuals since MJ apparently wrote the song “Happy Birthday Lisa.” I’ve kind of assumed the song is owned by Fox and Gracie Films and that he therefore never got residuals off it, especially since he did it uncredited, but I’m not really sure.

But yeah, I don’t think they should pull it

This is true of all cartoons with white gloves, actually. I mean, we can probably assume say Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t designed with that in mind, but it is where the tradition originally derives from.

Yeah Bad is probably the last notably good album I’m aware of, and it was still about the moment his prime was starting to fade. Black or White is really catchy (and the Simpsons cameo in the video is fun) but it’s really heavy handed.

Probably depends on where you are but I hear his music out in public frequently still. I guess that may stop after this documentary but I definitely heard one of his songs somewhere not long before it came out and it felt odd with the timing. It gets lots of radio play too. I mean the estate has made one billion in

I just checked it and yeah, that was a ride.

For the record by “Thriller” I was referring to the album and not just the title track (though my comments do apply to it). I’ve never been a diehard fan, and he was already a freakshow by the time I was old and lucid enough to be aware of him as a celebrity, but Wanna Be Startin’ Something is one of my favorite
