Actually, you understand incorrectly. A friend of mine is one of these politically appointed ambassadors. An academic (specializing in the relevant country) with school-age kids and a spouse who hasn’t been able to continue to work in their host country, living on a government salary.

Meanwhile, they’re talking about not moving into the White House so as to not disrupt poor Barron’s schooling.
