Yeah, it requires a subscription. It was dropped years ago before it was relaunched, but it’s back to a subscription model. There’s a ‘trial’ you can look into that allows you to play all classes up to level 35 to get a taste, with some restrictions.
I’m pretty sure you can watch the cutscenes later. I’ve been in that same situation (and been in parties with other people in the same situation) in some areas before.
