Well the UNSC WAS hard sci-fi until 343i turned the Spartans IV armor into anime power rangers hybrids. God Halo 4 had some terrible design work.

It sure does, a "Year" is one rotation around the sun and a "day" is the amount of time it takes a celestial object to do one full rotation. So Mercury goes around the sun faster than it takes for it to spin one full rotation.
