I’d also say Man of Steel plays like a conscious deconstruction of the first two Superman movies from the ‘70s. Which makes it a little better, I guess? Though Snyder and Goyer didn’t really have anything of substance to say, so its not really by much.

Didn’t Superman Returns come out after Batman Begins? I thought the cool reception of Superman’s return to the big screen was what kinda ended up pushing the The Dark Knight trilogy being it’s own thing. But everything you said here is pretty spot-on.

It works for the ending of TFA, but it doesn’t lead into anything immediately interesting. I mean, what would have been next? They talk over coffee? And you can’t really skip ahead a year because your audience is gonna want to know what happened there, but then that means everybody is gonna be where they were left…
