Good article I think the problem with the people you mention is that they are also counting the calories they think they are burning which is not the greatest idea since we will not know exactly how many calories we burned from doing a certain exercise.
What keeps me from taking these “breaks” is just think that if i miss a week that all my progress will be lost. I know that will not happen but it keeps me from not taking these breaks.
