Yeah, I know its not difficult. Just doesn't sit well psychologically for me having to mess with a brand new car. All told though, its not the end of the world. And the features bundled in with the SE certainly make the jump worth it despite my love of plaid haha.

I've actually heard this complaint on a few different VAG cars. Most attribute it to the throttle-by-wire actually.

I'll have to reach out to some dealers and figure out exactly what will be possible. Ideally, I'd get an SE with DSG and xenons, minus leather.

Its a nice balance between efficiency/reliability and performance. Also keep in mind that this new 2.0 liter has 258 lb ft of torque. So it will be infinitely more punchy throughout the rev range compared to the FR-S/BRZ. As a daily driver, I think the GTI is spot on in terms of power and efficiency.

Yep - test drove a MkV a little while back and really liked the DSG. Perhaps the A3 is using the 7 speed version? Not too familiar with the A3 powertrain.

Unfortunately not. VW has bundled everything except the DSG, Performance Pack, Xenon headlights, and Driver Assistance Pack (parking sensors, etc.).

Stepping up to the SE costs $3,000, but adds sunroof, Fender audio, keyless go and a backup camera among other niceties. But you lose the plaid in favor of black leather seats. That's boring. The loaded Autobahn only comes as a four-door now, but includes a power driver's seat and navigation.

Could not agree more. Seems like they literally hand out licenses to people once they're of age. I can't tell you how many truly incomprehensible maneuvers I see on a daily basis that just cause me to lose all faith in humanity. It sucks for those of us who genuinely enjoy driving and take it seriously.
