As far as I know he's a celebrity there while mostly unknown here in the US. Maybe he thinks he can actually do some good using that. I can't know what he's thinking, but like his views or not he's never been stupid.

When first rewatching the original Ultraman on DVD, I noticed that the dubbing would drop out randomly for a bit and be replaced with Japanese audio and subs.
