I think 538 tested this and you’re right. It’s based on the bechdel test, but— there’s no difference in profits, and ROI is better for movies that pass the test. Wait... Re-googling in process... It looks like a real researcher (non-journalist) even followed up.

And gravity fails because Sandra Bullock is the only one who’s really in the damn thing. It’s not perfect.

The bechdel test is a negative screen. It’s not meant to isolate all movies that give women cursory treatment- but if a film fails, that’s pretty solid evidence that women are getting the short end of the stick in that film. In other words, passing the test isn’t really a result. But failing it is.
