Part of what made the Exorcist so frightening was its infamous use of subliminals, both visual and aural. I don’t think they were new exactly, but the movie used them to unprecedented effect. In a dark movie theater on a huge screen, they would be terrifying.

Agreed. I will not watch this film (for 2 major reasons—not a horror fan, and even the idea of harm coming to a child gives me panic attacks) but I’ve seen the very end (without the panic-inducing part) and...yeah. That is a hell of an ending. What a heart-wrenching twist.
