Ford definitely went through the “Paint and stickers” special editions through the 70s and 80s too. The Mustang II’s version of the Mach 1 was “top of the line” trim without any performance difference, and there was a GT350 in ‘84 as the 20th anniversary model, and the ‘79 Indy 500 Pace Car, and the Cobra II and King…

That’s true. And for what it’s worth, Ford has done a pretty good job with making their special edition Mustangs actually feel special, with a combination of different wheels, more power, different exhaust, etc. Whereas a lot of other “special edition” cars just have a slightly different paint job and a badge.
