Man, I certainly appreciate that there are other perspectives out there than my own, but as someone who likes to think they’re incredibly sympathetic (empathetic when I can be), shit like this drives me absolutely nuts.

I agree 100x with this. Also by leaving the movie wide open, he left the very possibility that the next writer was going to take it in whatever direction they wanted- and that’s pretty much what JJ did.

This is the correct take - it just doesn’t make sense that Disney spent $4 billion on the rights to this franchise, announced a new trilogy and then decided to hire three random directors and just let them do whatever. The standalone movies were the place to let individual directors shine - which worked perfectly…

I felt like the scene in the quarry, where Richie breaks down and the others surround and hold him, was the affirmation scene. They knew, they understood, they loved him.
