Well, IF religious people are wrong in the end (hypothesis), I'd say it probably comes from the fact they wish everything happened "for a reason" - understand a humanly, philosophically justified reason, rather than simply physics" - while I surely think it's not the case.

I think they tried and made it clear enough they didn't think Valves "owed" them something. Protesting by playing their game is close to the nicest way you can protest, isn't it.

I honestly didn't have that much of a hard time with Dark Souls, especially since the levels are smaller and pretty fast I ended up knowing almost all the tricks. The swamp kinda annoyed me but I got over it.

Not only I feel like defending the game but... I feel like to have a game be overrated, you need something flashy about it, a part of it that pleased the crowd and was given too much credit.
