I would say that the quality of any tire can make a difference, not just the marketing. I like to find the overall ratings for tires, and aim for good wet-snow performance from my all season tires. (Not enough storage space for going full winter tires, unfortunately.)

I thought it was cheesy when my wife put a world map in our dining room and a US map in the bathroom, but it continues to remind me how bad my halfway decent sense of geography still is. There’s a lot to see in maps.

With the ease that electronic maps will show you alternate routes, and the estimated 10 minute difference that some of them might add to travel time, I agree that people need to be flexible with their routes.
