I won’t name him, but one of the people leading the harassment campaign was banned a few years ago from Magic the Gathering after, among other things, targeting a prominent cosplayer and causing her to leave the community (she has since returned, to much rejoicing).

I too, hate media companies attempting to do the due diligence of verifying information before posting a story that might impact people’s lives.

This is a shining-bright example of how the fucking scum of the Internet hides behind their keyboards spamming “KYS BITCH, NOBODY LOVES YOU, YOU’RE FUCKING WORTHLESS!!” until they actually do it.

With all of the banning and changes - it only took the greater part of 20 years for internet companies to realize that they have social impact are part of the “social contract” of society. There’s no neutral position when you’re literally the platform that everyone uses.
