The issue with reagan is the he worked hard to cut the safety net, create misinformation about the people who were on it, which lead to punishing/punitive measures against the less fortunate. It’s less about what was happening in the economy than the policies that were devised in response to that.
Reagan’s contribution to inequality was the drastic slashing of income taxes on the richest Americans from their mid century norms, combined with the start of the destruction of the social safety net that continues to this day.
