It’s almost impressive how they made a movie full of wild technicolor fantasy creatures and I have never heard a child talk about this movie or heard from a fried “Ugh my kid wants to watch Avatar for the 10th time this week.” Cameron worked so hard to make it a Serious Movie For Grown-Ups that it sucked all the fun

Thank you for this series. I haven’t seen (or heard of, in some cases) every movie you wrote about, but I have read every article, and they all made me want to see the movie. I won’t go on about how this series ending feels like the end of an era (though it does), or how this was maybe the last remaining regular

I hadn’t thought about it in 40 years, but I can somehow remember ALL of the Fraggles’ songs from the Minstrel episode - and how they worked in harmony.

He certainly wasn’t saying that J. K. Rowling is an anti-Semite or that the Harry Potter movies should be expunged from our collective memory. But he did talk about “how some tropes are so embedded in society that they’re basically invisible even in a considered process like moviemaking,” so it’s not like he was just

At least he’s guaranteed a role in David Zucker’s next spoof on liberals, right next to comedy powerhouse Kevin Sorbo.

I believe this was Dowd’s way of respecting the spoiler embargo but confirming the rumours that Kraven the Hunter will appear played by Dame Judi Dench.

Yeah there’s almost this ‘reverse toxicity’ thing going on where people who liked the show feel attacked that their taste is being called out, and then get toxic because of it. It was an objectively mediocre show (look at the rare sync between critic and user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes) that people lost interest in

The people who Netflix needed to watch it, but didn’t watch it (typical viewers) have mostly not encountered these ‘toxic nerds’ and definitely don’t care about their opinions. They don’t live in that particular internet bubble.

Have we finally hit the famed bottom of the nostalgia barrel, only for this industrious man-worm to continue digging ever further downward into the murky loam beneath?

Great point, let’s all talk about our favourite classic Hope Van Dyne comics!

I also thought it was novel at the time. Remember, when TLOU came out, The Walking Dead was only a couple of seasons old. I’d argue that the show’s longevity after all these years, now hurts any other IP that wants to dip their toe in the subject. The Walking Dead may be celebrated for how long its lasted, but I

More than anything, I just hate the fucking score, as well as the fact that this is what all Broadway shows sound like now. It’s like the cast of Glee fucked the house band of a megachurch.

Yeah, I always clocked Spike’s confrontation with Vicious in the finale as being motivated in no small part by him knowing that Jet and Faye were next on Vicious’ kill list. A lot of interpretations I’ve read put it all on Spike being completely unable to live in the present or too broken by the death of Julia, as if

My Cowboy Bebop essay:

We could lose a lot of (really good) episodes, like the floating fat guy at the circus who was weirdly compelling for not making a damn bit of sense, and focus on the core Vicious serial stuff..... which is what I think they’re probably doing, because in the streaming era that’s how shows work, but I dunno if you can

Vicious is a compelling villain because he seems like one: Aesthetics are so important that Vicious being drawn a certain way does a lot of the legwork, while another medium would struggle to find a way to accomplish that. He looks scary,

The harmonica kid episode was classic, along with Pirrou (? spelling may be off). The latter is a perfect showcase of why you show, don’t tell. Easily one of my favorites of the entire series.

Really hope they stay faithful to the source material and include the scene where he kills Aerith

Netflix has a horrible track record with live action versions of anime and the costume reveal last week looked like amateur cosplay. Jet’s arm especially was just... not good. Add to that the fact that the original creator basically wrote off this version and the actress playing Faye is doing her best Brie Larson
