I am just seeing this reply now but I’m kind of glad to hear it. It would be a shame for that much effort to go wholly unappreciated. I’m still curious about the new movies just because if James Cameron is working that hard on something, it’s got to have something worthwhile. Right? Or he’s just completely lost his

The merchandise argument makes sense up until Disney made theme park rides based on it. I’ve been to the parks since and I didn’t see kids running around with Avatar stuff. And it’s Disney, so you know they made stuff. And there’s been Park Only characters that have caught on before, so it’s not just that the kids

Vague Spoilers Ahead: The design and movement of the creature fully extended at the end is very Final Boss, Let’s Kill God Anime. It’s hard to explain exactly but if you know, you know.

As far as the wild coincidences of people showing up everywhere, my brain processed all of it as It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (or Rat Race, if you will) with Barry as the prize. It’s not realistic but there’s a loose internal logic to it. If someone happens upon Barry, it’s because they were looking for Barry.

An actor said in an interview (I honestly forget who) that his theory on why the Oscar ratings are declining is that it used to be one of the few places you could see actors out-of-character and now we’re seeing their texts to their exes on the daily. I do think there’s something to that, but that is not something

This column was everything I want in pop culture writing. A deep dive into a genre that is not taken very seriously, that acknowledges its strengths and weaknesses in good faith and good humor. I couldn't believe how many you've actually done when I read it. I would have kept reading for months but understand why it's

The discourse around this show has been uncomfortable. Disliking something is not toxic. It’s not only for gatekeeping haters. And no one owes any piece of entertainment a chance if they feel it’s not for them. At the same time, clearly the show was not hated by “everyone.” Many people seemed to enjoy it, which is

The character of Ed is a human child. An odd human child, but a child. She behaves in a distinctly anime way because she is an anime character. What is the point of making a live action version of an animated series and forcing your actors to behave like cartoons? I feel like they made that choice so if it didn’t

This is one of those movies that’s sort of beyond a “favorite” and more just woven into my being. Saw it at the right time and will always love it. Great write up, you perfectly captured why.

I saw it last night, expecting to hate it (I was asked to go) but ended up really enjoying it. Most of the things singled out as negatives I thought worked and at the very least, were intentional choices. Including Stewart’s performance. And I did find it funny in its way! The absurdity of the situation was its own

And in wrestling you’re trained to talk shit. Maybe it really is as simple as Johnson not being able to function without a heel.

I was late to Ted Lasso so I binged Season 1 when Season 2 already started, loved it, thought it was everything everyone said it was, and am now completely baffled by what this show is trying to do.

I thought the game skipping ahead a decade or so into the post-apocalypse was pretty novel at the time. Now that Walking Dead has been going a thousand years, it seems less so.

This song is late 90s alt rock ballad perfection. If I'm ever running to the airport in the rain or some shit, it's this song.

I think this one is more about catharsis than Feel Good. The big number You Will Be Found is so emotional because in a moment of intense pain, Evan actually wasn’t found. He was alone in the moment he’s singing about. It’s kind of an Instagram vs Reality study on grief which is weird, but this is a weird, weird time.

I genuinely have no idea what to make of any of that, but for what it’s worth, you are one of the more even handed reviewers on this site or any other. Maybe that’s why it stung her so much? But regardless, if you truly are living rent free in this woman’s head, kudos.

I certainly don’t remember that detail from the comic and I agree it does add some interesting shades to her character while still feeling true to it.

I haven’t read the comic since it concluded in 2008 but I feel like this is already giving deeper characterization to some of the cast than the source material (which I loved). I’ve been excited to see this for so long but damn, this is the last thing I’m in the mood for right now.

100% agree. He saw what running did to his old family and when Jet was hurt he saw what it was going to do to his new one. It wasn’t that he couldn’t let go of the past, his past was actively hunting him.
