The simple fact is you can make that engine efficient as can be, but it's the standard "Truck Shape" and lack of active-aero that's holding them back from their true potential.
While the 70's & 80's were fun decades for mini-trucks, the 90's really brought about the sweet-spot for small-truck size & scale relative to their full-size counterparts.
